I used to be active a lot on early to mid 2010’s tumblr and it’s been weird seeing all the new franchises and fandoms become popular and the fan art that comes with it. I’m really happy for all the people who get inspired to make art and are appreciating new media, but as someone who’s been self conscious about making and posting fan art since even back then, I’ve realized that no matter what kind of fan art you make or what fandom you’re a part of… it’s all cringe! Making fan art and expressing your appreciation of media is allowing yourself to be vulnerable and sharing those feelings with others for better or worse. You might draw characters weird or write some really odd fan fiction, but that’s you being vulnerable and without your vulnerability, you wouldn’t be making art that means as much as it does to you. That’s why I’ve decided to be cringe! I drew Terezi and Karkat from memory and it bothers me slightly that I probably drew them wrong but these characters meant a lot to me in middle school and I’m gonna let myself enjoy that even if people think its cringe. Everything is cringe so let’s just be as cringy as we want to be!
