I was going to write a caption about the history behind La Catrina but because I keep learning new things every time I try and fact check myself how about I just tell to you to read about La Catrina because it has a cool history that ties into the Mexican Revolution and of course Dia de Los Muertos. I will say that one thing I thought was really interesting was that La Catrina started off as a caricature by Jose Guadalupe Posada that poked fun at indigenous Mexican women who tried to pass as European through extravagant clothing. Apparently Posada’s whole thing was that “Death is Democratic” and he loved illustrating skeletons, laughing at death, and reminding us that we’re all equal in the end.
